This week, Jane Golley stood next to the Chinese Deputy Ambassador at the National Press Club to say she had read an “anonymous” report debunking the ongoing Uyghur Genocide.
By choosing to use her platform as head of the tax payer funded ANU China in the World centre to cast doubt on the existence of ongoing atrocities against the Uyghur people based on nothing more than the contents of an anonymous letter, Golley was choosing to deliberately ignore the testimony of thousands of Uyghur victims who have described what can only be referred to as a systematic program of rape, torture and ethnic cleansing at the hands of the Chinese state.
This is both morally and intellectually indefensible, representing the total abrogation of her responsibility as an academic to scholarly inquiry in the search for truth. Our movement Defend Democracy therefore calls on the Australian National University to remove her from her salaried position as head of the China in the World centre at the earliest possibility.
